Google Maps

Plan your workout route:

  • Click on the image to go to Google Maps
  • Move your mouse to your starting point.
  • Right-click to bring up menu.
  • Select Measure distance.
  • To add another point, click on the map
  • Keep clicking to create your route
  • Consider printing a copy to put in your pocket or send a copy to your smartphone



Water Levels

Get to know the bodies of water near where you live. For example, if working out near the James River in Richmond, Virginia:

  • Click on the image to go to the Westham Gauge
  • Get to know the typical water level; the typical water level may not be currently showing on gauge
  • Steer clear of dangerous water levels



Know Before You Go

Research where you workout:

  • Click on the image to go to the Lexus Nexus Crime Map
  • Keep in mind that the Crime Map shows past events and nothing can predict the future
  • Use Google Street View to “see” your route beforehand
  • Have fun getting to know new neighborhoods!

Tour History

Incorporate learning about history, architecture and cultural locations:

  • Look on Museum websites for walking tours
  • Research local sites of interest



Explore Nature

Incorporate learning about nature into your workouts! Suggestions include:

  • Look on local park websites
  • Glean nature information from social media groups like Park FaceBook Groups
  • Use apps to identify trees and plants



Enjoy Celebrations

Incorporate holidays & special events into your workout:

  • Tour Holiday Lights & Halloween Decorations
  • Utilize familiar songs
  • Mix in a memory game - For Thanksgiving, I’m bringing turkey and doing 10 push-ups
